Breaking News! A Washington DC Pond Has An Algae Problem!

The news channels are going crazy over the green water in the Lincoln Memorial Reflection Pool.  But is this really that out of the norm?

I'll cover some of this in the following video but basically, no, this is not unusual.  New ponds, freshly refilled ponds are very prone to green water issues early on.  The ecological balance must be restored over time.  Beneficial bacteria can help with this, but even then it will take some time.

Then too, the source water used to fill the pool came from the Potomac river, and like most rivers in the United States, it is laden with phosphorus and nitrogen, the two main drivers of algae blooms.  Reduce those and you will reduce the algae concentration.
