Can You Aerate A Pond Too Much?

Pond aeration is an extremely beneficial tool to add to an aquatic ecosystem as it raises oxygen levels throughout the water body.  This is very supportive and protective of fish populations and it often helps with a variety of water quality problems too.

But can you aerate a pond too much?  Is there a downside to aerating too aggressively?  The answer is yes.  Aeration can be overdone, and this can cause problems for fish in very specific conditions.  As well, pond aeration that's too aggressive may stir up too much nutrient rich sediment from the bottom and, at least for a time, increase algae growth.

The video below discusses the potential of over aeration, especially during very hot conditions, and how to make modifications to the aeration layout to keep fish safe during such stressful periods.
