Hot Iowa summers can create some of the most stressful conditions of the year for pond fish.
Warm water naturally holds less dissolved oxygen while fish, microorganisms and decomposing organic matter continue consuming it.
Heavy algae growth can compound the problem.
Algae and aquatic plants may produce substantial oxygen during daylight but consume oxygen through respiration after sunset. In a heavily productive pond, dissolved oxygen can reach its lowest point shortly before sunrise.
A properly designed aeration system provides an additional and much more dependable source of gas exchange and circulation.
For deeper stratified ponds, however, a new aeration system should be started carefully during summer.
Rapidly mixing a severely stratified pond can expose fish to poor-quality, oxygen-depleted bottom water.

Winter presents a completely different challenge.
